'''State Highway 223''' ('''SH 223''') is a highway maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) entirely within the city of Alpine in Brewster County. Unofficially, the route is locally called the '''Loop Road''' The {{convert|1.6|mi|km|1|adj=on}} route designated between 1933 and 1936 runs from the combined U.S. Route 67 and U.S. Route 90 in front of Sul Ross State University on the west side of town to SH 118 on the city's north side. There are no intersections with other highways between its termini. A number of the city's significant points of interest are located along the route.
==History== SH 223 was established on September 4, 1935.<ref>{{cite web |archive-date=October 20, 2017 |date=August 19, 1935 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171020140615/https://publicdocs.txdot.gov/minord/MinuteOrderDocLib/003673873.pdf |title=Minutes |website=publicdocs.txdot.gov |publisher=Texas Department of Transportation |access-date=28 April 2023 |language=en-us |url-status=live |url=https://publicdocs.txdot.gov/minord/MinuteOrderDocLib/003673873.pdf}}</ref> according to official state highway maps from that time. Before 1940, SH 223 at its southern terminus also intersected the former SH 3 which ran concurrently with US 67 and US 90 through Alpine.<ref name="map 1936"/><ref name="Brewster 1940">{{cite map|publisher=Texas State Highway Department|title=General Highway Map, Brewster County, Texas|url=http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/cgi-bin/aris/maps/maplookup.php?mapnum=4803|date=February 1, 1940|scale=1"=2 mi.|page=1|accessdate=2010-05-23|archive-date=June 6, 2011|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110606070611/http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/cgi-bin/aris/maps/maplookup.php?mapnum=4803|url-status=dead}}</ref> Since its creation, SH 223 is remarkably stable and unchanged compared to most Texas state highways of comparable age.
