==History== Team Rubicon was formed in January 2010 following the Haiti earthquake, when William McNulty and Jacob "Jake" Wood<ref name="TEDxSanDiego-JakeWood-2011">{{cite news|last1=Wood|first1=Jake|date=December 2011|title=A new mission for veterans – disaster relief|language=en|work=TEDxSanDiego|url=https://www.ted.com/talks/jake_wood_a_new_mission_for_veterans_disaster_relief#t-280403}}</ref><ref name=TED-JakeWood-Bio-2011>{{cite news|title=Ted Speaker Jake Wood, CEO, Team Rubicon|url=https://www.ted.com/speakers/jake_wood|work=TED|language=en}}</ref> led a medical team into Port-au-Prince three days after the disaster. The first Team Rubicon team consisted of eight members and they gathered funds and medical supplies from friends and family, flew into the Dominican Republic, rented a truck, and headed west to Haiti. The team treated thousands of patients, traveling to camps deemed "too dangerous" by other aid organizations{{Citation needed|date=May 2025}}. They ventured outside the traditional scale of disaster response, focusing on those who would be overlooked and left untreated.<ref name="Outside-FutureOfDisasterRelief-2016">{{cite news|last1=Dickman|first1=Kyle|date=25 August 2016|title=The Future of Disaster Relief Isn't the Red Cross|language=en|work=Outside|url=https://www.outsideonline.com/2106556/team-rubicon-takes-red-cross}}</ref><ref name=Grinnell-GrinnellPrize-Video-2012>{{cite news|title=2012 Grinnell Prize: Jacob Wood and William McNulty, Team Rubicon|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=N0lIAtqLhW8|work=Grinnell College|date=5 September 2012|format=Video}}</ref>

The second problem was inadequate veteran reintegration into civilian life. Military veterans' training, skills, and experience make them well suited to disaster response while helping others can promote healing and community to alleviate some of the reintegration issues that drive a high suicide rate among veterans.<ref name=TEDxSanDiego-JakeWood-2011 />
The death of fellow Team Rubicon member Clay Hunt from suicide redoubled Team Rubicon's organizational mission toward veteran reintegration. The team's role in domestic disasters is both to provide humanitarian assistance and to provide veterans an opportunity to continue to serve.<ref name=TEDxSanDiego-JakeWood-2011 /><ref name=CNN-ClayHunt-Refocus-2012>{{cite news|title=Brothers in arms refocusing efforts – CNN Video|url=http://www.cnn.com/videos/world/2012/03/30/heroes-pkg-wood-extra.cnn|work=CNN|date=30 March 2012}}</ref>
