'''''Tanichthys''''' is a genus of freshwater cypriniform fish, monotypic in the family '''Tanichthyidae'''.<ref name = "Cof family">{{Cof family|family=Tanichthyidae|access-date=6 March 2025}}</ref> Its species are native to rivers and streams in southern China and Vietnam.

== Etymology == The name ''Tanichthys'' is a combination of ''Tan'' and ''ichthys''. ''Tan'' is a Chinese surname, and is taken from the Chinese boy scout leader Tan Kam Fei, who discovered the first specimen. ''Ichthys'' means "fish" in Greek.<ref name="ETYFish">{{cite web | url = https://etyfish.org/tanichthyidae/ | title = Family TANICHTHYIDAE Mayden & Chen 2010 (Mountain Minnows) | access-date = 19 March 2025 | author = Christopher Scharpf | work = The ETYFish Project Fish Name Etymology Database | publisher = Christopher Scharpf | date = 4 September 2024}}</ref>

== Species == Until the turn of the century, the type species, ''T. albonubes,'' was the only one known. In 2001, however, Jörg Freyhof and Fabian Herder described a new and very similar species, ''T. micagemmae'', from the Ben Hai River in Vietnam. A third species was described, also in Vietnam, in 2019.

In 2022, deep genetic divergences were found among the various populations of ''T. albonubes'' in southern China (despite there being only subtle morphological disparities), resulting in the split of this species into 7.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Jin |first=Jinjin |last2=Li |first2=Chao |last3=Zhao |first3=Jun |date=2022-03-09 |title=Descriptions of six new species in <scp>White Cloud Mountain minnow <i>Tanichthys albonubes</i></scp> complex (<scp>Cypriniformes: Tanichthyidae</scp>) in southern China |url=https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jfb.15012 |journal=Journal of Fish Biology |language=en |volume=100 |issue=4 |pages=1062–1087 |doi=10.1111/jfb.15012 |issn=0022-1112 |archive-url=http://web.archive.org/web/20230204071947/https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jfb.15012 |archive-date=2023-02-04}}</ref> Hence, currently, this genus contains 9 species in total; these are listed below:<ref name="Cof genus">{{Cof genus|genus=Tanichthys|access-date=17 January 2026}}</ref> * ''Tanichthys albiventris'' <small>Li, Bohlen & Liao, 2022</small> * ''Tanichthys albonubes'' <small>Lin, 1932</small> (white cloud mountain minnow) * ''Tanichthys flavianalis'' <small>Li, Liao & Shen, 2022</small> * ''Tanichthys guipingensis'' <small>Jin, Li & Zhao, 2022</small> * ''Tanichthys huidongensis'' <small>Jin, Li & Zhao, 2022</small> * ''Tanichthys kuehnei'' <small>Bohlen, Dvorák, Thang & Šlechtová, 2019</small> * ''Tanichthys luheensis'' <small>Jin, Li & Zhao, 2022</small> * ''Tanichthys micagemmae'' <small>Freyhof & Herder, 2001</small> (Vietnamese cardinal minnow) * ''Tanichthys shenzhenensis'' <small>Jin, Li & Zhao, 2022</small>
