Merchant played Daenerys Targaryen in the unaired pilot of the HBO series ''Game of Thrones'',<ref name="tv"/> based on George R. R. Martin's ''A Song of Ice and Fire'' series of fantasy novels. The pilot was poorly received, and as a result the first episode was completely remade.
