'''{{lang|es|Televisión de Guinea Ecuatorial|i=no}}''' ('''TVGE''', translated into English as ''Television of Equatorial Guinea'') is an Equatorial Guinean state television channel, which is part of the public media system called {{lang|es|Radio Televisión de Guinea Ecuatorial|i=no}} (RTVGE).

A Spanish-speaking channel, is basically sponsored by the local government depending on the Ministry of Information, Press and Radio, so their programs are usually pro-government.

It has its headquarters and main offices in the former capital city of Malabo, from where it broadcasts to most of the national territory.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.lagacetadeguinea.com/154/12.htm |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110319194343/http://www.lagacetadeguinea.com/154/12.htm |url-status=dead |archive-date=March 19, 2011 |title=La publicidad, el pan nuestro de cada día |access-date=November 30, 2018 |last=Ligero |first=Armando |work=La Gaceta de Guinea Ecuatorial |location=Malabo |language=es |quote=Televisión de GUINEA ECUATORIAL (TVGE), alcance Nacional }}</ref>

==History== The channel was inaugurated on 20 July 1968 as the territorial center of {{lang|es|Televisión Española|i=no}} (TVE), and in its inaugural broadcast the Spanish leader Francisco Franco gave a speech to the people of Equatorial Guinea.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://hemeroteca.abc.es/nav/Navigate.exe/hemeroteca/madrid/abc/1968/07/21/025.html |title=Franco inauguró con un mensaje la emisora de Televisión Española en Guinea Ecuatorial |access-date=November 30, 2018 |date=July 21, 1968 |work=ABC |publisher=Diario ABC |location=Madrid |language=es }}</ref> The Spanish minister of Information and Tourism, Manuel Fraga, participated in the inauguration.<ref>{{cite magazine |title=La televisión en Guinea Ecuatorial |date=July 1968 |magazine=La Guinea Española |issue=1627 |pages=128–130 |location=Santa Isabel (Malabo) |publisher=Misioneros Hijos del Inmaculado Corazón de María |language=es |accessdate=November 30, 2018 |url=http://www.bioko.net/guineaespanola/1968/196807_01.pdf}}</ref>

After the independence of Equatorial Guinea on 12 October 1968, the channel (which was still being operated by TVE) came into conflict with the new authorities, who accused it of broadcasting "racist programming".<ref name=angelfire>{{cite web |url=https://www.angelfire.com/sk2/guineaecuatorial/Lacosta2.htm |title=Cronología de Guinea Ecuatorial: 1950-1979, De la independencia al juicio contra Macías |access-date=November 30, 2018 |last=Lacosta |first=Xavier |language=es }}</ref> As the situation worsened (in the context of the Diplomatic Crisis between Spain and Equatorial Guinea in 1969), the new Equatorial Guinean government demanded that Spain donate all the facilities that the territorial center of TVE had in Equatorial Guinea or a donation of its economic value (of 2 million pesetas), but Spain refused.<ref name=angelfire /> Faced with this refusal, the new president, Francisco Macías Nguema, banned the broadcast of part of the programming sent from Madrid,<ref name=angelfire /> mainly the recreational and cultural programs,<ref name=macias>{{cite book |last=Nze Nfumu |first=Agustín |title=Macías, verdugo o víctima |date=March 2006 |publisher=Lulu Press, Incorporated |url=https://es.calameo.com/read/0000169470754d8b13051 |accessdate=November 30, 2018 |language=es |isbn=978-1-4116-8324-2 }}</ref> since for the government it was "imperialist propaganda".<ref name=macias /> On the other hand, the territorial news that TVE issued for the country became heavily censored by the new Equatorial Guinean Ministry of the Interior.<ref name=tve>{{cite web |url=http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/archivos-tema/archivos-tema-aventuras-televisivas-guinea/1670206/ |title=Aventuras Televisivas en Guinea |date=25 November 2013 |access-date=November 30, 2018 |publisher=TVE |location=Madrid |language=es }}</ref>

TVE eventually closed its territorial center that gave television coverage to the country.<ref name=angelfire /> Shortly thereafter, its broadcasts were resumed as {{lang|es|Televisión Nacional de Guinea Ecuatorial|i=no}}, but it ceased to function in 1973<ref name=macias /> due to the government's lack of interest in creating the optimal conditions for the good performance of the station,<ref name=macias /> ignoring the requirements of the few Spanish technicians who still operated it under Equatorial Guinean supervision and eventually left the country.<ref name=macias /> During the Macías dictatorship, TVGE usually broadcast footage of the regime's tours of the country and popular meetings.<ref name=macias /> After the withdrawal of the Spanish technicians, Macías wanted to put the television back on track with the help of Cuban technicians, but it was impossible to repair the damaged material.<ref name=macias />

TVGE was reestablished in 1979, after the coup d'état known as {{lang|es|Golpe de la Libertad|i=no}}.<ref name=angelfire /> TVE technicians also participated in the re-establishment, as part of the cooperation policy initiated by Spain with Equatorial Guinea after the coup.<ref name=tve />

In 2009, the channel received criticism from the Equatorial Guinean government for faults presented in its transmissions, for which cooperation agreements have been signed to train personnel with Spain and China, as well as investments for a new headquarters and purchase of equipment with the intention of improving the quality of its programming.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.lagacetadeguinea.com/139/02.htm |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090508120406/http://www.lagacetadeguinea.com/139/02.htm |url-status=dead |archive-date=May 8, 2009 |title=El Jefe de Estado se manifiesta decepcionado de los medios de comunicación estatales |access-date=November 30, 2018 |last=Meñe Micha |first=Patricio |work=La Gaceta de Guinea Ecuatorial |language=es }}</ref> In addition, it has also received criticism from the opposition for alleged bias with the government.

Since 31 May 2011, its international transmission reaches all of Europe, some countries in North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and part of Greenland (Overseas territory of Denmark) through the W3A satellite of Eutelsat.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://satcesc.com/web/2011/05/31/rtvge-nuevo-canal-de-television-en-espanol-en-eutelsat-w3a/ |title=RTVGE, nuevo canal de televisión en español en Eutelsat 7A |access-date=November 30, 2018 |date=May 31, 2011 |publisher=SatCesc |language=es }}</ref> Their emissions were regularized two weeks later.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://satcesc.com/web/2011/06/14/la-cadena-en-espanol-rtvge-ya-emite-regularmente-en-eutelsat-w3a/ |title=La cadena en español RTVGE ya emite regularmente en Eutelsat 7A |access-date=November 30, 2018 |date=June 14, 2011 |publisher=SatCesc |language=es }}</ref> It also broadcasts to the Americas through the Telstar 12 satellite. In 2016, its transmission for all of America began formally through the satellite Hispasat 1E.
