Antman did his undergraduate studies at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1961.<ref name="biosketch"/> He earned a Ph.D. in 1965 from the University of Minnesota, under the supervision of William H. Warner.<ref>{{mathgenealogy|name=Stuart Sheldon Antman|id=31881}}.</ref> He joined the New York University faculty in 1967, and moved to Maryland in 1972. He became Distinguished University Professor at Maryland in 2001, and Distinguished University Research Professor in 2014.<ref name="biosketch"/>

Antman became a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2009,<ref name="biosketch"/> and a fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2012.<ref>[http://www.ams.org/profession/fellows-list List of Fellows of the American Mathematical Society], retrieved 2014-12-20.</ref> He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1978, and with John M.
