The '''Araucanian herring''' ('''''Strangomera bentincki''''' or '''''Clupea bentincki''''') is a species of fish in the family Clupeidae.<ref>{{cite WoRMS|author=Bailly, Nicolas|year=2020|id=282909 |title=''Strangomera bentincki'' (Norman, 1936)}}</ref> It is an epipelagic fish, silvery below and dark blue above, which schools in coastal waters off the west coast of South America. It ranges along the Chilean coast from Valparaiso south to Talcahuano. It schools at depths from {{convert|0|to|70|m|-1}} in nearshore areas.<ref name = iucn/>
There it filter feeds on smaller plankton such as diatoms. It reaches sexual maturity when it is about {{convert|10|cm}} long, and is a pelagic spawner, spawning between June and November.<ref name=FishBase>{{FishBase |Strangomera|bentincki |month = April|year = 2021}}</ref> It grows to a maximum standard length of {{cvt|15|cm}}.<ref name = iucn/>
