'''Smith''' is a hamlet in northern Alberta, Canada within the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River No. 124.<ref>{{AltaML}}</ref> It is located on Highway 2A, approximately {{convert|182|km}} northwest of Edmonton, at the confluence of the Lesser Slave River and the Athabasca River.

== History == The settlement of Smith began in 1914 after the Edmonton, Dunvegan and British Columbia Railway had reached the present location of the hamlet. The arrival of railway resulted in subdivision of the townsite.<ref name=DMI>{{cite web | url=http://www.dmi.ca/about_dmi/dmi_in_alberta/prpd/detailed_forest_management_plans/documents/Ch6.HumansandtheirInfrastr.pdf | title=A Physical, Biological and Land Use Synopsis of the Boreal Forest's Natural Regions of Northwest Alberta, Chapter 6 – Humans: Their Demographics, Employment, & Infrastructure | last1=Leonard | first1=David | last2=Stelfox | first2=Brad | last3=Wynes | first3=Bob | date=September 1999 | access-date=2011-07-05}}</ref>

As a result of the establishment of Smith, the previously established Village of Port Cornwall located {{convert|1.4|km|mi|abbr=on}} to the northwest, across the Athabasca River on the north shore of Lesser Slave River, began to deteriorate. Subsequently, Port Cornwall dissolved from village status on September 11, 1917.<ref name=dissolution>{{cite web | url=http://www.municipalaffairs.alberta.ca/cfml/pdf_search/pdf/RMUN/0507/Municipal_District_of_Lesser_Slave_River_No_124_Village_of_Port_Cornwall_Dissolved_1917_No17.pdf | publisher=Alberta Municipal Affairs | title=Notice – Village of Port Cornwall (excerpt from The Alberta Gazette, September 29, 1917) | date=1917-09-29 | access-date=2011-07-05}}</ref>
