'''Skagi''' is the name of the peninsula between Húnaflói and Skagafjörður, which derives its name from Skagi.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Skagi |url=http://www.nat.is/travelguide2/ahugav_st_skagi_nl.htm |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304202558/http://www.nat.is/travelguide2/ahugav_st_skagi_nl.htm |archive-date=2016-03-04 |access-date=2025-06-03 |website=www.nat.is |language=is}}</ref>

There used to be three municipalities in Skagi; two were {{lang|is|Skagahreppur}} and {{lang|is|Vindhælishreppur}}, now named Húnabyggð and Skagaströnd, on the western side, which belonged to Austur-Húnavatnssýsla County.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Jónsdóttir |first=Erla |title=Orð að lokum |trans-title=Closing Remarks |url=https://www.skagabyggd.is/is/stjornsysla/frettir/ord-ad-lokum |access-date=2025-06-03 |website=Skagabyggð.is |language=is}}</ref> The third municipality, on the eastern side, was Skefilsstaðahreppur, which became a part of what is now Skagafjörður County in 1998.<ref>{{Cite web |last= |title=Fróðleikur um Skagafjörð |trans-title=Information about Skagafjörður |url=https://www.skagafjordur.is/is/mannlif/frodleikur-um-skagafjord |access-date=2025-06-03 |website=Skagafjörður.is |language=is}}</ref>

Reykjaströnd near {{lang|is|Skagafjörður|italic=no}}, east of Tindastóll Mountain, is not considered part of Skagi. The settlement on the Húnaflói side in Skagi (the west), beginning at the church site Höskuldsstaðir—and out past Kálfshamarsvík cove—is called {{lang|is|Skagaströnd|italic=no}} district. On the {{lang|is|Skagafjörður|italic=no}} side (the east), Skagi is considered to comprise the area from {{lang|is|Sævarlandsvík|italic=no}} cove along Tindastóll and out to Skagatá (the tip of the peninsula).<ref>{{Cite web |last=Magnúsdóttir |first=Guðrún S. |title=Hraun |url=https://nafnid.arnastofnun.is/ornefnaskra/18518/pdf |access-date=2025-06-03 |website=nafnið.is |page=2 |language=is}}</ref> The outermost farms on the Húnavatnssýsla side are also said to be in Skagi, but not Skagaströnd. The county border runs the length of Skagi, a bit east of center.

The edge of Skagi is low-lying near the {{lang|is|Skagaheiði|italic=no}} plateau, where there are a number of lakes with great trout fishing.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |title=Skagi {{!}} Náttúrufræðistofnun Íslands |url=https://www.ni.is/is/midlun/natturuminjaskra/nordvesturland/skagi |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250421144403/https://www.ni.is/is/midlun/natturuminjaskra/nordvesturland/skagi |archive-date=2025-04-21 |access-date=2025-06-03 |website=www.ni.is |language=is}}</ref> Mountains begin farther south, particularly to the southwest. The most well-known of these mountains is Spákonufell, overlooking {{lang|is|Höfðakaupstaður|italic=no}} (now generally known as {{lang|is|Skagaströnd}}), which is the only urban area in Skagi. There used to be a small village by Kálfshamarsvík cove near the outer edge of Skagi,<ref>{{Cite web |last=Iceland |first=North |title=Kálfshamarsvík |url=https://www.northiceland.is/en/place/kalfshamarsvik |access-date=2025-06-03 |website=Visit North Iceland |language=en}}</ref> but no urbanization took place on the eastern side of Skagi, although there used to be fishing access from Selvík.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Steinsson |first=Gunnstein |url=https://timarit.is/page/6561630?iabr=on#page/n157/mode/2up |title=Skagafirðingabók |publisher=Sögufélags Skagafirðinga |year=1973 |editor-last=Pétursson |editor-first=Hannes |edition=6th |location=Reykjavík |pages=156 |language=is |trans-title=Skagafjörður Book |chapter=Minnisstæður Hákarlsróður |trans-chapter=Shark fishing memories |editor-last2=Bjarnason |editor-first2=Kristmundur |editor-last3=Björnsson |editor-first3=Sigurjón |editor-last4=Helgason |editor-first4=Ögmundur}}</ref> Throughout Skagi, especially farther out, there were many extra resources to take advantage of, like seal and eider duck hunting, as well as trout fishing in {{lang|is|Skagaheiði|italic=no}}'s lakes.<ref name=":0" />

On the {{lang|is|Skagafjörður|italic=no}} side of the peninsula, Hraun is the outermost farm. There is a lighthouse there in Skagatá. On June 16, 2008, a polar bear came onto the land near Hraun.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2022-04-03 |title=Hraun á Skaga - NAT ferðavísir |trans-title=Hraun in Skagi |url=https://is.nat.is/hraun-a-skags/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250505202117/https://is.nat.is/hraun-a-skags/ |archive-date=2025-05-05 |access-date=2025-06-03 |website=nat.is |language=is}}</ref> Another polar bear was put down on July 3, 2008 in Þverárfjall, a short way from the highway between Sauðárkrókur and {{lang|is|Skagaströnd|italic=no}}.<ref>{{Cite news |date=2008-10-31 |title=Hvítabjörninn á Þverárfjalli yfir tvítugt |trans-title=Polar bear in Þverárfjall over 20 years old |url=https://www.feykir.is/is/frettir/hvitabjorninn-a-thverarfjalli-yfir-tvitugt |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231217213949/https://www.feykir.is/is/frettir/hvitabjorninn-a-thverarfjalli-yfir-tvitugt |archive-date=2023-12-17 |access-date=2025-06-03 |work=Feykir |language=is}}</ref> {{lang|is|Þverárfjall|italic=no}} is in the southernmost of Skagi, and about 35 kilometers from Hraun.<ref>{{Cite journal |date=2002-08-26 |title=Yfirlit yfir útboðsverk |trans-title=Overview of pending projects |url=https://timarit.is/page/6486232?iabr=on#page/n1/mode/2up |journal=Framkvæmdafréttir |language=is |volume=29 |issue=2 |pages=2–3 |via=Tímarit}}</ref>
