Born in Genzano di Roma, Marcellini started his career as a theater director before moving to films, where he first worked as an assistant director.<ref name=bioe2>{{cite book|last1=Roberto Poppi|title=I registi: dal 1930 ai giorni nostri|year=2002|publisher=Gremese Editore, 2002|isbn=8884401712}}</ref> He directed eleven films between 1953 and 1970, also writing the screenplays for several of them.<ref name="bioe2"/>
