Simley is a member of Independent School District 199 (Inver Grove Heights Schools), the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) and the Metro East Conference. The school consistently ranks on U.S. News & World Report's annual Best High Schools list. Most recently, Simley was ranked in the top 25% of Minnesota high schools on the Best High Schools list and in the top 30% of U.S. high schools on the list, as well as being recognized for its expansive and rigorous college readiness opportunities.

Simley High School was named for I.T. Simley, the retired superintendent of schools from South St. Paul, Minnesota, who was a consultant to Inver Grove Heights during the district’s transition years. The school year is divided into four marking periods or quarters which are approximately twelve weeks long. To be eligible for graduation from Simley High School, a student must earn 64 credits in grades {{nobr|9{{ndash}}12}}.
