Its range includes Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.<ref name=msw3/> It was previously listed as a full species.<ref name=msw3/> The subspecies name commemorates the naturalist and collector Walter Grimwood Doggett.{{cn|date=September 2025}}
