==Biography== Silvano Piovanelli was born in [[Borgo San Lorenzo]], in the [[province of Florence]], on 21 February 1924.<ref name=miranda>{{cite news|work=The Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church|title=PIOVANELLI, Silvano|url=https://cardinals.fiu.edu/bios1985.htm#Piovanelli|last=Miranda|first=Salvador}}</ref> He studied at the [[seminary]] of [[Florence]] from 1935 to 1947, and was [[Holy Orders|ordained]] to the priesthood by Cardinal [[Elia Dalla Costa]] on 13 July 1947.<ref name=hierarchy>{{cite news|work=Catholic-Hierarchy.org|title=Silvano Cardinal Piovanelli|url=http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/bpiova.html}}</ref> He then served as a [[curate]] in the industrial town of Rifredi until October 1948, when he became vice-[[Rector (ecclesiastical)|rector]] of [[minor seminary]] of Florence.<ref name=vatican>{{cite news|work=[[Holy See]]|title=PIOVANELLI Card. On 28 May 1982, Piovanelli was appointed [[Auxiliary Bishop]] of Florence and [[Titular Bishop]] of ''Tubunae in Mauretania'' by [[Pope John Paul II]].<ref name=hierarchy/> He received his [[Bishop (Catholic Church)|episcopal consecration]] on the following 24 June from Cardinal [[Giovanni Benelli]], with Bishops Antonio Bagnoli and [[Giovanni Bianchi (physician)|Giovanni Bianchi]] serving as [[Consecrator|co-consecrators]], at the [[Florence Cathedral|Cathedral-Basilica of ''Santa Maria del Fiore'']].<ref name=hierarchy/> He selected as his episcopal [[motto]]: ''"In Verbo Tuo"''.<ref name=coat>{{cite news|work=CARDINALI E LORO TITOLI ODIERNI|title=Piovanelli Silvano|url=http://www.araldicavaticana.com/Hpiovanelli__silvano.htm}}</ref> Following the unexpected death of Cardinal Benelli in October 1982, Piovanelli was promoted to [[Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Florence|Archbishop of Florence]] on 18 March 1983.<ref name=hierarchy/> John Paul II created him [[Cardinal (Catholicism)|Cardinal-Priest]] of ''S. After an 18-year-long tenure, he retired as Archbishop on 21 March 2001.<ref name=hierarchy/> He lost the right to participate in a [[papal conclave]] upon reaching the age of 80 on 21 February 2004.<ref name=miranda/>
