The ''Shoalway'' is a trailing suction hopper dredger,<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://westminster.boskalis.com/fileadmin/user_upload/Subsites/Boskalis_uk/Vessels/vessel_sheets/Shoalway_LR.pdf |title=Archived copy |access-date=1 April 2015 |archive-date=2 April 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150402120919/http://westminster.boskalis.com/fileadmin/user_upload/Subsites/Boskalis_uk/Vessels/vessel_sheets/Shoalway_LR.pdf |url-status=dead }}</ref> owned and operated by Royal Boskalis,<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://boskalis.com//about-us/fleet-and-equipment.html|title=Fleet and equipment|website=boskalis.com}}</ref> originally intended for the British market and built in 2010.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/new-mersey-dredger-named-liverpool-3422482|title=New Mersey dredger named at Liverpool Cruise Terminal|first=Peter|last=Elson|date=6 May 2010|website=liverpoolecho}}</ref>
== Design == The vessel was the first of four ships designed by Conoship International<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.conoship.com/en_dredgers,12.html |title=Dredgers - Conoship |access-date=7 May 2015 |archive-date=18 May 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150518062851/http://www.conoship.com/en_dredgers,12.html |url-status=dead }}</ref> and D.W. den Herder maritiem, with a shallow draught and high manoeuvrability for difficult port construction, maintenance, land reclamation, coastal defense and offshore energy projects.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.boskalis.com/activities/dredging-inland-infra.html |title=Dredging | Boskalis |access-date=1 April 2015 |archive-date=24 April 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150424153100/http://www.boskalis.com/activities/dredging-inland-infra.html |url-status=dead }}</ref> The typical carpentry needed for a vessel of this kind was completed by Hans Dorgelo. It was the first dredger in the Boskalis fleet to use azimuth thrusters as its main means of propulsion. The ship is equipped with rainbow discharge valves for beach replenishment<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.dredgepoint.org/dredging-database/equipment/shoalway|title=Shoalway - Trailing suction hopper dredgers - Equipment | Dredging Database|website=www.dredgepoint.org}}</ref> or land reclamation, two jet water engines for sediment dispersal, non-protruding bottom doors in the hopper (cargo hold) for dumping at sea and engines designed to stringent MARPOL sulphur emissions standards.
== Capabilities == Equipped with a suction pipe with a diameter of {{convert|900|mm|ftin|abbr=on}}, a dredge pump of {{convert|1680|kW|abbr=on}}, two jet pumps of {{convert|746|kW|abbr=on}} and a maximum dredging depth of {{convert|30|m|ftin|abbr=on}} the ship is able to pump its load ashore by pipeline, dumping or rainbowing.
== Sister Vessels == Its sister vessels of the ''Shoalway'' class include the ''Causeway'', the ''Strandway'' and the ''Freeway''.
