== History == Sherman Hospital opened on July 7, 1888,<ref>{{citation|title=Elgin Hospital to Mark 70th Anniversary|date=July 20, 1958|journal=Chicago Tribune}}</ref> in a two-story Elgin house donated by local drug store owner and prominent businessman, Henry Sherman. There were four beds and one operating room. After numerous additions between 1895 and 1999, the hospital had grown to 353 beds. Advocate Sherman's first open-heart surgery was performed in 1972. It was also one of the first open heart surgeries performed in a community hospital in the USA.<ref>{{Cite web|last=reporter|first=Richard Wronski, Tribune staff|title=Elgin hospital OKd for heart surgeries|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2004-04-22-0404220274-story.html|access-date=2020-12-11|website=chicagotribune.com|date=22 April 2004 |language=en-US}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|title=Our History {{!}} Elgin IL {{!}} Advocate Sherman Hospital|url=https://www.advocatehealth.com/sherman/patients-visitors/hospital-information/history|access-date=2020-12-10|website=www.advocatehealth.com|language=en}}</ref>

In 2009, in need of a new and more modern campus, a new building was constructed on Randall Road, and opened on December 15, 2009. It included a 15-acre geothermal lake to heat and cool the hospital, making it the largest geothermal system in Illinois, and one of only two hospitals in the United States using this method.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Our Geothermal Lake {{!}} Elgin IL {{!}} Advocate Sherman Hospital|url=https://www.advocatehealth.com/sherman/patients-visitors/hospital-information/geothermal-lake|access-date=2020-12-10|website=www.advocatehealth.com|language=en}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.shermanhealth.com/about_history.php |title=Over a Century of Growth and Caring |publisher=Sherman Health |date=2009-12-15 |accessdate=2014-02-24 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140424041838/http://www.shermanhealth.com/about_history.php |archive-date=2014-04-24 |url-status=dead }}</ref>

On March 30, 2020, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker announced that the partially demolished old Sherman Hospital would be converted into an overflow center for COVID-19 patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Private contractors and the US Army Corps of Engineers began work converting the abandoned building into a 230-280 bed facility equipped to handle a surge in hospitalizations caused by the virus. As of December 2020, the site had yet to be used, but the building was in standby mode, ready to accept patients as needed.<ref>{{Cite web|last=Guerrero|first=Rafael|title=Transforming old Sherman Hospital into COVID-19 overflow facility has been 'challenging' but on schedule, officials say|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/elgin-courier-news/ct-ecn-elgin-old-sherman-hospital-coronavirus-st-0417-20200416-n7tm3rcbpvfcjkhadsmg6ayudm-story.html|access-date=2020-12-10|website=chicagotribune.com|date=16 April 2020 }}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|date=2020-03-31|title=Coronavirus In IL: Shuttered Medical Facility To Reopen|url=https://patch.com/illinois/elgin/coronavirus-elgin-shuttered-contagion-hospital-reopen|access-date=2020-12-10|website=Elgin, IL Patch|language=en}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|date=2020-04-07|title=Crews Working Around The Clock To Get Sherman Hospital In Elgin Ready For Patients|url=https://chicago.cbslocal.com/2020/04/07/crews-working-around-the-clock-to-get-sherman-hospital-in-elgin-ready-for-patients/|access-date=2020-12-10|language=en-US}}</ref>
