==Prophecy== The poem is named after the Chinese pastry shaobing. It is written in cryptic form and is difficult to understand. Some believe that certain lines contain references to the future of China at the time including: * Jingnan campaign (1399-1402)<ref name="Lo Hsiang-lin">{{cite book|title=Proceedings of Professor Lo Hsiang-lin|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=jZCwAAAAIAAJ|year=1970|publisher=Wanyou Book Company|pages=166–}}</ref> * Tumu Crisis<ref name="Xu Peiqi 2010">{{cite book|author=Xu Peiqi|title=General Knowledge Idiom Classroom: Religious Mythology Chapter|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=7JyTAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA219|date=1 January 2010|publisher=Zhonghua Book Company|isbn=978-962-8931-76-7|pages=219–}}</ref> * Rise of Zheng He * Political unrest of Wei Zhongxian (魏忠贤乱政)<ref name="Lo Hsiang-lin"/> * Fall of the Ming dynasty and rise of the Qing dynasty * First Opium War * First Sino-Japanese War<ref name="Pan Guangjian 1962">{{cite book|author=Pan Guangjian|title=History of First Sino-Japanese War|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=pgSFAAAAIAAJ|year=1962|publisher=Practice Society}}</ref> * Founding of the Republic of China<ref name="Bai Xue 1993">{{cite book|author=Bai Xue|title=Heaven Knows Earth Knows I Know|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=BlxeAAAAIAAJ|year=1993|publisher =Chunfeng Literature & Art Publishing House|pages=181–}}</ref>
==Evaluations== Some Chinese researchers claimed that ''Pancake Poem'' is quite spiritual and is representative of the Chinese prophecy culture.<ref name="Li Youqian 2015">{{cite book|author=Li Youqian|title=Li Youqian essay collection (2) |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=4lyfCgAAQBAJ&pg=PT115|date=29 September 2015|publisher=Shanghai Huawen Creative Writing Center|pages=115–|id=GGKEY:Q60CLWPD9ZP}}</ref>
However, most of the work's predictions of what would happen after 1911 are too vague and inaccurate. This led some experts to believe the work is a hoax of recent production, designed to reassure people that all would be well when there was much unrest as a consequence of the Japanese invasion and the rise of communism.<ref name="Tong" />
