The plant was first described as ''Sevada schimperi'' by Alfred Moquin-Tandon in 1849, as the sole species in genus ''Sevada''. In 2024 Hossein Akhani placed the species in genus ''Soda'' as ''Soda schimperi''.<ref name = powo/>
