'''Settle Hydro''' is a micro hydroelectric scheme, owned by the community, in Settle, North Yorkshire, England. It is located on the River Ribble, at Settle Weir near Bridge End Mill. It generates 50 kW of electricity using a screw turbine in part of the former mill race.<ref name="sh"/>

== History ==

Settle weir was built across the Ribble to provide a head for the Bridge End Mill which was built to mill corn and was then converted to spin cotton.<ref>{{cite web|title=History|url=http://www.settle.org.uk/history/|website=Settle.org|accessdate=18 July 2016}}</ref> Later the mill became a woodworking shop turning imported cedar into furniture for local chapels. Although the wheel still turns, it is not connected to a shaft and the mill building has been converted to housing.<ref name="Heritage"/>

Planning permission and the Abstraction Licence were granted in February 2009 and the share issue started in September 2008<ref>{{cite news|last1=Brignall|first1=Miles|title='We see electricity fall from the sky'|url=https://www.theguardian.com/money/2008/sep/13/energy.householdbills|accessdate=10 July 2016|work=The Guardian|date=13 September 2008}}</ref> raised the necessary capital of £410,000.<ref>{{cite news|title=Settle Hydro Sparks Social Enterprise Award|url=http://yorkshiretimes.co.uk/article/Settle-Hydro-Sparks-Social-Enterprise-Award|accessdate=10 July 2016|work=The Yorkshire News|date=22 October 2012}}</ref> Lakeland Marine Construction began work in June 2009 and completed it in October with Settle Hydro Ltd generating electricity by November of the same year. Over the forty-year lifetime of the scheme that generates 165,000 kWh per annum, it is envisaged that 3,200 tonnes of carbon will be saved.<ref name="sh" />

The screw was constructed in Germany.<ref>{{cite news|title=Settle hydro power switch-on is just weeks away|url=http://www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/news/4730265.Settle_hydro_power_switch_on_is_just_weeks_away/|accessdate=10 July 2016|work=The Westmorland Gazette|date=10 November 2009}}</ref>

Despite the installation of a fish ladder adjacent to the screw, the fish numbers upstream have dropped and it is believed that the noise from the screw is scaring the salmon.<ref>{{cite news|title=Salmon fishing 'harmed by hydro scheme'|url=http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/salmon-fishing-harmed-by-hydro-scheme-1-4193772|accessdate=10 July 2016|work=TheYorkshire Post|date=30 January 2012}}</ref> During periods of low water flow the turbine automatically shuts down to maintain a constant flow of water through the fish ladder.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Tate |first1=Lesley |title=Wet February saw record power output at Settle Hydro |url=https://www.cravenherald.co.uk/news/18327387.wet-february-saw-record-power-output-settle-hydro/ |accessdate=23 March 2020 |work=Craven Herald |date=23 March 2020 |language=en}}</ref>
