Unlike Yanni's recent albums which featured a full orchestra and acoustic instrumentation, ''Sensuous Chill'' was built around synthesizers, programmed rhythms and electronic sounds, said to "come full circle" to his early-1980s albums.<ref name=MornCall20160708/> Employing today's more sophisticated technologies, Yanni said that it took a 200 to 350 tracks per song.<ref name=MornCall20160708/> The album's third track, "Drive", is a remix of "Looking Glass" in the 1986 album ''Keys to Imagination''.<ref>{{cite news|title=Drive|url=http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-cinemaplus/drive/article8290308.ece|accessdate=11 June 2016|work=The Hindu|date=28 February 2016|language=en-IN}}</ref>

Tracks 7, 11, and 16 feature vocals from Leslie Mills. Tracks 2, 9, 12, and 15 feature vocals from Chloe Lowery. Some songs, like "Whispers In The Dark", "Our Days", and "I'm So" are remakes of older Yanni songs.

==Reception== AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that ''Sensuous Chill'' was neither rushed nor lazy. He thought the album's 70 minutes made the album "a little bit long" but that Yanni didn't keep its 17 tracks "treading water." Erlewine noted the album's variety, including "placid surfaces," a slight Middle Eastern flair, R&B beats, and "spectral soul vocals straight out of Pink Floyd." Erlewine added that there was a "charm to (the) traditionalism" of the album, which could have been cut in the 1990s.<ref name="AllmusicReview20160211">{{cite web |last1=Erlewine |first1=Stephen Thomas |title=Yanni / ''Sensuous Chill'' / AllMusic review |url=http://www.allmusic.com/album/sensuous-chill-mw0002907544 |website=AllMusic |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160207144302/http://www.allmusic.com/album/sensuous-chill-mw0002907544 |archivedate=February 7, 2016 |url-status=live }}</ref>

The sound of the album was said to be almost entirely built around synthesizers, programmed rhythms, and electronic sounds, so as to give the album a "modern edge."<ref name="Spartanburg20160214"/> Though Yanni continues to include music styles and rhythms from around the world, unlike the "epic sweep" or "placid feel" of some of Yanni's earlier work, ''Sensuous Chill's'' tracks were described as "pop-oriented" and "rhythmically assertive," with moods that are "sumptuous" and "sultry."<ref name="Spartanburg20160214">{{cite news |last1=Sculley |first1=Alan |title=Yanni's new CD's sound built around programmed rhythms, electronic sounds |url=http://www.goupstate.com/article/20160214/ent/160219865?template=printpicart |publisher=Spartanburg Herald-Journal (GoUpstate.com) |date=February 14, 2016 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160214210049/http://www.goupstate.com/article/20160214/ent/160219865?template=printpicart |archivedate=February 14, 2016 |url-status=live}}</ref>

Yanni was said to employ "sounds and textures used in today's electronica" to give the album a modern edge, its songs being "more pop-oriented and rhythmically assertive" than his recent albums.<ref name=MornCall20160708/> However, Yanni's "ability to craft memorable melodies" was also said to be apparent throughout.<ref name=MornCall20160708>{{cite web |last1=Sculley |first1=Alan |title=Yanni, playing at Sands, re-embraces electronic instrumentation |url=http://www.mcall.com/entertainment/music/mc-yanni-sands-bethlehem-event-center-20160707-story.html |publisher=The Morning Call (mcall.com) |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160708132225/http://www.mcall.com/entertainment/music/mc-yanni-sands-bethlehem-event-center-20160707-story.html |archivedate=July 8, 2016 |date=July 8, 2016 |url-status=live }}</ref>
