Portocarrero signed with Emelec in 2014, arriving in the reserve team, where he played 68 matches, scoring 5 goals, before being promoted to the first team for the 2016 season. That year, under manager Alfredo Arias, Portocarrero made his professional debut in a 1–0 home victory against LDU Quito.
