==Taxonomy== ''Sebastes gilli'' was first formally described as ''Sebastodes gilli'' in 1891 by the American ichthyologist Rosa Smith Eigenmann with its type locality given as off Point Loma near San Diego, California.<ref name = "Cof genus"/> ''Sebastes'' is a speciose genus with over 100 species assigned to it and is divided into a number of subgenera. ''S. gilli'', however, is not assigned to a subgenus and is regarded as ''incertae sedis'' within ''Sebastes''.<ref name = Li2006>{{cite journal |author=Li, Z. |author2=Gray, A.K. |author3=Love, Milton |author4=Asahida, Takashi |name-list-style=and |author5=Gharrett, A.J. |year=2006 |title=Phylogeny of members of the rockfish (''Sebastes'') subgenus ''Pteropodus'' and their relatives |journal=Canadian Journal of Zoology |volume=84 |pages=527-536 |doi=10.1139/z06-022}}</ref> The genus ''Sebastes'' is the type genus of the subfamily Sebastinae in the scorpionfish family Scorpaneidae which is classified by ''Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes'' within the suborder Scorpaenoidei of the order Perciformes.<ref name = ECoF>{{cite web |url=https://www.calacademy.org/scientists/catalog-of-fishes-classification/ |title=Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes Classification |editor1=Richard van der Laan |editor2=Ronald Fricke |access-date=4 May 2026 |work=Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes |publisher=California Academy of Sciences}}</ref>
