Robinson, a freestyle specialist from Charlotte, North Carolina, was a varsity swimmer for the Virginia Cavaliers.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Fowler |first1=Scott |title=Swimmers hope for Olympic splash |work=The Charlotte Observer |date=May 6, 2012 |page=6A}}</ref> He won relay gold medals at the 2009 Universiade and 2011 Pan American Games, for the {{nowrap|4 × 100 m freestyle}} and {{nowrap|4 × 200 m freestyle}} respectively. At the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, Robison featured in the heats of the {{nowrap|4 × 100 m freestyle}} team, which secured a bronze medal.
