She narrowly defeated fellow Corvallis school board member Sami Al-Abdrabbuh in the Democratic primary to replace [[Dan Rayfield]], who declined to run for re-election in order to run for [[Oregon Attorney General]]. McDonald is a survivor of colon cancer.
