He played eight first-class matches for Jharkhand between 2004 and 2008.<ref name="Bio">{{Cite web|url=http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/35284.html|title=Santosh Lal|accessdate=1 June 2016|website=ESPNcricinfo|publisher=ESPN Inc.}}</ref> He was a childhood friend of MS Dhoni, whom he taught how to play the helicopter shot.
