==Biography== Samuel T. Prout was born in Monrovia on 21 October 1855 to American immigrants. His father was from Baltimore, Maryland and his mother was from Virginia.<ref name="acs">{{cite book|last1=|first1= |date=November 1907|title=Liberia, No. 31|trans-title=|url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89062310479&seq=302&q1=prout|language=English |page=302}}</ref> Prout was educated at Liberia College.<ref>{{cite book |last1=Heard|first1= William H.|date=1898|title= The Bright Side of African Life |trans-title=|url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=emu.010002643712&seq=39&q1=prout|language=English |location= |isbn=|page=35}}</ref> In his youth, he trained as a printer.<ref name="acs"/>

In 1898, Prout became a Methodist pastor. He then worked as broker and general agent. In 1901, Prout was appointed by President Garretson W. Gibson as postmaster general.<ref name="acs"/> He continued to serve under President Arthur Barclay. Under Prout's administration over the postal service, in 1906, the seventh series of Liberian postage stamps were issued.
