'''Sam Thomas Winnall''' (born 19 January 1991) is an English former professional footballer who played as a striker.
==Career== ===Wolverhampton Wanderers=== Winnall joined the youth ranks of Wolverhampton Wanderers as a teenager, before signing professional forms in May 2009. He recovered from a cruciate knee injury<ref>{{cite news| title=Dour Wolves workout|publisher=harriers-online.co.uk| url =http://www.harriers-online.co.uk/season09-10/news09-10/news18-7-09.shtml| date =18 July 2009}}</ref> to make his senior debut on 24 August 2010 in a League Cup victory over Southend United,<ref>{{cite news| title=Wolverhampton 2–1 Southend|publisher=BBC Sport| url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/league_cup/8936647.stm| date=24 August 2010}}</ref> which was to be his only Wolves first team appearance.
In February 2011 he moved on a month's loan to League Two side Burton Albion,<ref>{{cite news| title=Wolves forward Sam Winnall joins Burton Albion on loan|publisher =BBC Sport| url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/burton_albion/9393796.stm| date=10 February 2011}}</ref> later extended to the end of the season after a run of four goals in six appearances.<ref>{{cite news| title=Burton Albion extend loan of Wolves' Sam Winnall|publisher=BBC Sport| url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/burton_albion/9420302.stm| date=10 March 2011}}</ref>
The striker went out on loan again, joining League Two side Hereford United on a month's loan from 26 August.<ref>{{cite news| title=Bulls bring in Winnall |url=http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12875_7127947,00.html |publisher=Sky Sports| date=26 August 2011}}</ref> After returning to Wolves at its conclusion, he moved on loan again in January 2012, to join Scottish Premier League side Inverness Caledonian Thistle for the rest of the season.<ref>{{cite news| title=Inverness land Wolves striker Sam Winnall on loan|publisher=BBC Sport| url =https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/16747766| date=26 January 2012}}</ref>
During pre-season for the 2012–13 season Winnall was given permission to undergo a trial with Preston North End but was not offered a contract.<ref>{{cite news| title=PNE say play it again Sam| publisher=LEP Sport| url=http://www.lep.co.uk/sport/football/pne-say-play-it-again-sam-1-4788326| date=31 July 2012| archive-date=2 August 2012| access-date=31 July 2012| archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120802005534/http://www.lep.co.uk/sport/football/pne-say-play-it-again-sam-1-4788326| url-status=dead}}</ref> Instead his next move was a loan at League One club Shrewsbury Town whom he joined in a one-month deal on 28 September 2012.<ref>{{cite news| title =Shrewsbury Town sign Lee Collins and Sam Winnall on loan|publisher=BBC Sport| url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/19756287| date=28 September 2012}}</ref>
At the end of the 2012–13 season his contract with Wolves expired and was not renewed, meaning the striker left the club having made only one first team appearance during his time at Molineux.<ref>{{cite news| title=The next generation| publisher=Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C| url=http://www.wolves.co.uk/news/article/the-next-generation-180613-870538.aspx| date=18 June 2013| url-status=dead| archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130622000340/http://www.wolves.co.uk/news/article/the-next-generation-180613-870538.aspx| archive-date=22 June 2013| df=dmy-all}}</ref>
===Scunthorpe United=== Following a successful trial spell during pre-season, he subsequently signed for League Two club Scunthorpe United in a one-year deal,<ref>{{cite news| title =Scunthorpe United: Sam Winnall signs one-year deal|publisher=BBC Sport| url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/23488938| date=29 July 2013}}</ref> scoring on his debut on 3 August 2013 against Mansfield Town.<ref>{{cite news| title =Scunthorpe 2–0 Mansfield|publisher=BBC Sport| url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/23474860| date=3 August 2013}}</ref> He was both Scunthorpe's and League Two's leading scorer in 2013–2014, and was nominated for the latter's Player of the Year Award in March 2014.
Scunthorpe took up a one-year option on his contract in May 2014, extending his deal until 2015. At the same time, Winnall was offered a new contract which – according to Scunthorpe chairman Peter Swann – was a "vast improvement" on his current deal. Swann said: "It's important that the fans know that we do rate him and that we want him to stay here."<ref>[https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/28144976 Sam Winnall: Scunthorpe United offer improved terms to striker] – BBC Sport Online</ref>
