==Early career==
Malcolm attended Wanganui High School and was a member of the 1st XV.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|url=http://m.nzherald.co.nz/wanganui-chronicle/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503424&objectid=11357800|title=Talented first-five lands NZ U20s berth|last=|first=|date=|website=The New Zealand Herald|publisher=|access-date=20 August 2016}}</ref> He also played touch rugby and rugby sevens for the school. He moved to Palmerston North to attend Massey University's rugby institute and also study an agricommerce degree. He joined the Varsity club.
He has been in the Hurricanes U20s<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://rugbyheartland.co.nz/wp/2015/02/18/hurricanes-u20-team-named/|title=Hurricanes U20 Team named|last=|first=|date=2015-02-18|website=|publisher=|access-date=20 August 2016}}</ref> as well as the Manawatu U19s.<ref name=":0" /> Malcolm was also selected for the New Zealand University and Hurricanes development sides in 2016. He was selected for the New Zealand national U20s training squad in 2014 and trialled as a halfback.<ref name=":0" />

He previously played for{{Rut|Manawatu}} in the Mitre 10 Cup and also West Harbour RFC.
