It was built in 1975 using Assyrian Revival architecture.<ref>detroit1701.org/Chaldean.html{{failed verification|date=June 2024}}</ref> In 1979, Iraqi former president Saddam Hussein donated $250,000 to the church and was given the key to Detroit. The church’s pastor, Jacob Yasso, calls the former Iraqi president “a very generous, warm man who just let too much power go to his head". The church was closed in 2015, as the local Assyrian population was very thinned out, and so it moved to a new facility in Warren, Michigan as "Our Lady Of Perpetual Help".<ref>{{cite web|author=Namou, Weam|url=http://www.chaldeannews.com/a-new-home-for-sacred-heart/|title=A New Home for Sacred Heart|publisher=Chaldean News|date=2015-07-02|url-status=bot: unknown|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150719131532/http://www.chaldeannews.com/a-new-home-for-sacred-heart/|archivedate=2015-07-19}}{{primary source inline|date=June 2024}}</ref> The building is being sold, with a "for sale" sign visible from a Google street view from October 2015.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.google.com/maps/@42.4322373,-83.106045,3a,60y,20.15h,98.77t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sAKA7loBXv6Z1lBiUqsw_yA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656|title = Google Maps}}{{unreliable source inline|date=June 2024}}</ref> The "for sale" sign was removed from Google street view from November 2016 onwards.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://maps.app.google/pEe8w9FaX58oNXf38?g_st=ac|title = Google Maps}}</ref>
