== Function ==

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the Ly6/uPAR family but lacks a GPI-anchoring signal sequence. It is secreted into the blood<ref name="pmid10211827" /> and is also sometimes found in semen when extracted into the female zygote which binds to the α7-acetylcholine receptor.<ref name=":0" /> It is shown to act as an endogenous tumor suppressor by reducing cell migration and invasion by mediating its own anti-tumor effect and by antagonizing the pro-malignant effects of nicotine.<ref name=":0" />

Mutations in this gene have been associated with Mal de Meleda, a rare autosomal recessive skin disorder characterized by an inflammatory palmoplantar hyperkeratosis. This is the consequence of a loss of SLURP1 which leads to a dysfunctional epithelial differentiation<ref>{{cite journal | vauthors = Favre B, Plantard L, Aeschbach L, Brakch N, Christen-Zaech S, de Viragh PA, Sergeant A, Huber M, Hohl D | title = SLURP1 is a late marker of epidermal differentiation and is absent in Mal de Meleda | journal = The Journal of Investigative Dermatology | volume = 127 | issue = 2 | pages = 301–8 | date = February 2007 | pmid = 17008884 | doi = 10.1038/sj.jid.5700551 | doi-access = free }}</ref> and an increased secretion of the inflammatory cytokines TNFα, IL1, IL-6, and IL-8.<ref>{{cite journal | vauthors = Swamynathan S, Buela KA, Kinchington P, Lathrop KL, Misawa H, Hendricks RL, Swamynathan SK | title = Klf4 regulates the expression of Slurp1, which functions as an immunomodulatory peptide in the mouse cornea | journal = Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science | volume = 53 | issue = 13 | pages = 8433–46 | date = December 2012 | pmid = 23139280 | pmc = 4113333 | doi = 10.1167/iovs.12-10759 }}</ref><ref>{{cite journal | vauthors = Chernyavsky AI, Galitovskiy V, Shchepotin IB, Grando SA | title = Anti-inflammatory effects of the nicotinergic peptides SLURP-1 and SLURP-2 on human intestinal epithelial cells and immunocytes | journal = BioMed Research International | volume = 2014 | article-number = 609086 | date = 2014 | pmid = 24877120 | pmc = 4024406 | doi = 10.1155/2014/609086 | doi-access = free }}</ref>

This gene maps to the same chromosomal region as several members of the Ly6/uPAR family of glycoprotein receptors.<ref name="entrez" />
