{{Short description|Protein found in humans}} {{Infobox_gene}} '''Zinc transporter 3''' also known as '''solute carrier family 30 member 3''' is a protein in humans that is encoded by the ''SLC30A3'' gene.<ref name="entrez">{{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: Solute carrier family 30 (zinc transporter), member 3 | url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene?db=gene&cmd=retrieve&list_uids=7781 }}</ref>
The SLC30A3 gene codes for the ZnT-3 SLC30A family membrane transport protein. ZnT-3 is required for the accumulation of zinc ions inside synaptic vesicles.<ref name="pmid9990090">{{cite journal | vauthors = Cole TB, Wenzel HJ, Kafer KE, Schwartzkroin PA, Palmiter RD | title = Elimination of zinc from synaptic vesicles in the intact mouse brain by disruption of the ZnT3 gene | journal = Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America | volume = 96 | issue = 4 | pages = 1716–21 | date = February 1999 | pmid = 9990090 | pmc = 15571 | doi = 10.1073/pnas.96.4.1716 | bibcode = 1999PNAS...96.1716C | doi-access = free }}</ref> In mice, ZnT-3 is required for some forms of memory that depend on the hippocampus and the amygdala.<ref name="pmid22084630">{{cite journal | vauthors = Sindreu C, Storm DR | title = Modulation of neuronal signal transduction and memory formation by synaptic zinc | journal = Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience | volume = 5 | page = 68 | year = 2011 | pmid = 22084630 | pmc = 3211062 | doi = 10.3389/fnbeh.2011.00068 | doi-access = free }}</ref> Zinc transport by ZnT-3 modulates memory formation by acting through the extracellular signal-regulated kinases signaling pathway.<ref name="pmid21321213">{{cite journal | vauthors = Mott DD, Dingledine R | title = Unraveling the role of zinc in memory | journal = Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America | volume = 108 | issue = 8 | pages = 3103–4 | date = February 2011 | pmid = 21321213 | pmc = 3044369 | doi = 10.1073/pnas.1100323108 | bibcode = 2011PNAS..108.3103M | doi-access = free }}</ref> Angiotensin II-induced senescence of vascular smooth muscle cells requires down-regulation of ZnT-3 and ZnT-10.<ref name="pmid22427991">{{cite journal | vauthors = Patrushev N, Seidel-Rogol B, Salazar G | title = Angiotensin II requires zinc and downregulation of the zinc transporters ZnT3 and ZnT10 to induce senescence of vascular smooth muscle cells | journal = PLOS ONE | volume = 7 | issue = 3 | article-number = e33211 | year = 2012 | pmid = 22427991 | pmc = 3299759 | doi = 10.1371/journal.pone.0033211 | bibcode = 2012PLoSO...733211P | doi-access = free }}</ref>
