The '''S-element''' is an RNA element found in p42d and related plasmids. The S-element has multiple functions and is believed to act as a negative regulator of repC transcription, and be required for efficient replication and act as a translational enhancer of repC.<ref>{{cite journal | vauthors = Venkova-Canova T, Soberón NE, Ramírez-Romero MA, Cevallos MA | title = Two discrete elements are required for the replication of a repABC plasmid: an antisense RNA and a stem-loop structure | journal = Molecular Microbiology | volume = 54 | issue = 5 | pages = 1431–1444 | date = December 2004 | pmid = 15554980 | doi = 10.1111/j.1365-2958.2004.04366.x | s2cid = 41843742 | doi-access = free | hdl = 10651/42013 | hdl-access = free }}</ref>
