==History== The idea was made during a project at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria<ref>{{Cite web |title=University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria |url=https://www.fh-ooe.at/en/}}</ref> for tracking sailboat races.<ref>{{cite web|title=Interview with Runtastic team in 2013|url=https://research2guidance.com/in-2013-we-already-have-more-than-14-million-downloads-thats-an-average-of-100000-downloads-per-day-interview-with-florian-gschwandtner-runtastic/|website=research2guidance|accessdate=26 May 2018|author=Ralf-Gordon Jahns|date=8 July 2013 }}</ref>

The company was founded in 2009 by Florian Gschwandtner, Christian Kaar, René Giretzlehner, and Alfred Luger in Pasching, Upper Austria.{{fact|date=May 2024}}

In August 2015, it was announced that Adidas had bought Runtastic out for €220 million ($240 million), this included the 50.1% stake Axel Springer SE bought in the company back in 2013, making Runtastic owned by Adidas.<ref>{{cite web|author=Natasha Lomas|url=https://techcrunch.com/2015/08/05/runtastic-acquired-by-adidas-for-240m/|title=Runtastic Acquired By Adidas For $240M|publisher=TechCrunch|date=5 August 2015|accessdate=26 May 2018}}</ref>

At the beginning of 2019, Runtastic was making two apps. These were rebranded in September of the same year. The "Runtastic" app was rebranded to the "Adidas Running" app, and the "Results" app was rebranded to the "Adidas Training" app.<ref>{{Cite web|date=2019-09-25|title=Runtastic and Adidas Give Athletes Unique Rewards and Benefits With New Adidas Running and Adidas Training Apps – Runtastic Mediacenter|url=https://www.runtastic.com/mediacenter/en/adidas-runtastic-en/|access-date=2020-09-10|website=Runtastic Mediacenter|language=en|archive-date=19 September 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200919095500/https://www.runtastic.com/mediacenter/en/adidas-runtastic-en/|url-status=dead}}</ref>

On March 20th, 2023, 70 Runtastic employees were let go. Later that year, on December 8th, 2023, Adidas announced the end of the "Adidas Training" app by March 31st, 2024.

Adidas made public on September 16th, 2024, that all 180 employees in Pasching, Vienna, and Salzburg will be let go by mid-2025. Any development of the "Adidas Running" app would be done in the company offices in Herzogenaurach, Amsterdam, and Saragossa in the future.<ref name="d3000000236735">{{cite web|url=https://www.derstandard.at/story/3000000236735/adidas-sperrt-runtastic-in-pasching-und-wien-zu | title=Adidas sperrt Sport-App-Entwickler Runtastic in Österreich zu|access-date=2024-09-16 |author=Andreas Danzer |language=de }}</ref>
