==Early life and education== Wilson was born in 1882, the son of Colonel Frederick Alexander Wilson, who was also an officer in the British Indian Army, and Louisa Agnes Marshall. He attended Wellington College in Berkshire and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst.<ref name="times"/>{{sfn|Smart|2005|p=339}}

==Military career== Wilson was commissioned into the Cheshire Regiment in 1901.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=27311|page=3129|date=7 May 1901}}</ref> He transferred to the 117th Mahrattas in 1904<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=27716|page=6139|date=23 September 1904}}</ref> and subsequently to the 114th Mahrattas.<ref>London Gazette 21 June 1910</ref>

Wilson served in served in Mesopotamia during World War I, at the beginning of which he had been a student at the Staff College, Quetta,{{sfn|Smart|2005|p=339}} and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, the Military Cross<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=29876|supp=y|page=12557|date=22 December 1916}}</ref> and the Croix de Guerre for his service.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=30264|supp=y|page=9108|date=31 August 1917}}</ref>

==Family== Wilson married Marian Blanche Florence Hollway, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel James Clinton Hollway, in 1905. They had two sons and two daughters.<ref name="times"/>
