Luff pulled off one of the biggest upsets on election night, as she defeated long time MLA Moe Amery to win the riding of Calgary-East.
On November 5, 2018, Luff made a statement announcing her refusal to sit in the Alberta legislature until changes were made to what she described as a "toxic culture" within the Alberta NDP caucus that prevented MLAs from expressing their views and properly representing their constituents.<ref name="bellefontaine">{{cite news|first=Michelle |last=Bellefontaine |url=https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/ndp-alberta-mla-robyn-luff-legislature-1.4892787 |title=MLA turfed from caucus after saying Notley's NDP gov't 'a culture of fear and intimidation' |publisher=CBC News |date=November 6, 2018 |accessdate=October 20, 2023}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|first1=Clare |last1=Clancy |first2=Emma |last2=Graney |url=https://edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/ndp-mla-robyn-luff-alleges-bullying-within-party-leaves-legislature-in-protest |title=NDP MLA Robyn Luff removed from caucus after alleging bullying within party |publisher=Edmonton Journal |date=November 5, 2018 |accessdate=October 20, 2023}}</ref> The government denied the allegations and removed Luff from its caucus later that evening, stating that it had "lost confidence in her ability to participate as a productive and trustworthy member of the government caucus".<ref>{{cite web |title=MLA Luff Removed from Government Caucus |url=https://albertandpcaucus.ca/news-events/post/mla-luff-removed-from-government-caucus |website=albertandpcaucus.ca |date=November 5, 2018 }}</ref><ref name="bellefontaine"/>
