Romei was born in Montevarchi on 20 December 1926.<ref name="sen">{{cite news|language=it |title=Roberto Romei |url=https://www.senato.it/leg/09/BGT/Schede/Attsen/00002067.htm |access-date=5 October 2021 |agency=Senate of the Republic}}</ref> He was general secretary of the Milan branch of the Italian Confederation of Workers' Trade Unions between 1968 and 1973.<ref name="cisl"/> Romei left Milan to serve the union on a national level, remaining in his position until 1983.<ref name="cisl"/> He was elected to the Senate to represent Lombardy in 1983 and served until 1987, as a member of Christian Democracy.<ref name="sen"/> Romei died in Rome on 5 December 2013.<ref name="cisl">{{cite news |title=Scomparso Roberto Romei |url=https://www.cislmilano.it/dettagli_articolo/5903/Scomparso-Roberto-Romei |access-date=5 October 2021 |publisher=Italian Confederation of Workers' Trade Unions |date=6 December 2013 |language=it}}</ref>
