Captain Richard Fildes may have named Robert Island for his brig {{ship||Robert|1814 ship|2}}.<ref>[https://data.aad.gov.au/aadc/gaz/display_name.cfm?gaz_id=110895 Australian Antarctic Data Centre Gazetteer" Robert Island.]</ref> Fildes was sealing in the South Shetlands in 1821–1822 until ice destroyed his vessel in March 1822.
