The region received appellation as an Australian Geographical Indication (AGI) in 2006. It is part of the Limestone Coast wine zone.

==Grapes and wine== As of 2014, the most common plantings in the Robe wine region within a total planted area of {{convert| 682|ha|abbr=on}} was reported as being Cabernet Sauvignon ({{percentage | 226| 682| 1 }}) followed by Shiraz ({{percentage | 171| 682| 1 }}), Chardonnay ({{percentage | 106| 682| 1 }}) and Merlot ({{percentage | 58| 682| 1 }}).
