Prideaux was the son of Jonathan Prideaux (d. 1637), of Theuborough, now known as Thuborough,<ref>Vivian, Lt.Col. J.n L., (ed.) ''The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620'', Exeter, 1895, p. 620, pedigree of Prideaux</ref> in the parish of Sutcombe, Devon. He enrolled at Exeter College, Oxford, on 13 December 1622, aged 16. He lived at Theuborough.
