Born at Teddington, Hawkey was educated at Merchant Taylors' School.<ref name="OBIT">{{cite web|url=http://www.espncricinfo.com/wisdenalmanack/content/story/228716.html |title=Wisden - Obituaries in 1991 |publisher=ESPNcricinfo |accessdate=2018-12-25}}</ref> Going up to the University of Cambridge, Hawkey made his debut in first-class cricket for the Free Foresters against Cambridge University in 1948.<ref name="FCM">{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/30/30057/First-Class_Matches.html |title=First-Class Matches played by Richard Hawkey |publisher=CricketArchive |accessdate=2018-12-25|url-access=subscription}}</ref> The following year he played two first-class matches ''for'' Cambridge University against the touring New Zealanders and Warwickshire, both played at Fenner's.<ref name="FCM"/> He scored 42 runs and took a single wicket across his three first-class matches.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/30/30057/30057.htmll |title=Player profile: Richard Hawkey |publisher=CricketArchive |accessdate=2018-12-25 |url-access=subscription }}{{Dead link|date=December 2025 |bot=InternetArchiveBot }}</ref> Besides playing cricket, he was also an international squash player, representing England.<ref name="OBIT"/> He also wrote a number of coaching books on the subject.
