Elvet was born in [[County Durham|Durham]] and was in the service of [[John of Gaunt]].<ref>[https://www.le.ac.uk/lahs/downloads/CocksvolumeLXVII-5sm.pdf University of Leicester]</ref> He succeeded his brother [[John Elvet|John]] as [[Archdeacon of Leicester]] in 1404. In 1424 he exchanged the Archdeaconry with [[John Legbourne]] for the [[benefice]] of [[Sedgefield]].
