Sheehan was born in [[Bantry]] Co. Cork, on June 16, 1845.<ref>[https://www.dib.ie/biography/sheehan-richard-a8024 Richard Sheehan] Dictionary of Irish Biography</ref> He was educated at Bandon national school and St Vincent's, Cork. He entered [[Maynooth College]] in 1860 and was ordained in 1868 for the diocese of Cork.<ref>[https://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/bsheer.html Bishop Sheehan] Catholic Hierarchy.</ref>
