'''Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine''' are a pair of man-made lakes located in Hot Springs, Arkansas, serving as a tourist attraction for the area. Both lakes were developed by Arkansas Power & Light. The lakes were built as part of Federal Project #271 a hydroelectric development for creating hydroelectric dams.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Hydroelectric operations {{!}} Entergy {{!}} We power life. |url=https://www.entergy.com/operations/hydro/ |access-date=2024-06-22 |website=www.entergy.com}}</ref> {{Infobox body of water | name = Lake Catherine | image = Lake Catherine AR-kmf.JPG | caption = | pushpin_map = Arkansas | image_bathymetry = | caption_bathymetry = | location = Garland / Hot Spring counties, Arkansas, United States | coords = {{coord|34.4442|-92.9134|type:waterbody_region:US-AR|display=inline}} | type = | inflow = | outflow = | catchment = | basin_countries = United States | length = | width = | area = {{convert|1940|acre|ha|abbr=on}} | depth = | max-depth = | volume = | residence_time = | shore = | elevation = | islands = | cities = | embedded = yes {{Infobox NRHP | embed = yes | name = Remmel Dam | nrhp_type = | image = | caption = | nearest_city = Jones Mill, Arkansas | coordinates = {{coord|34|25|37|N|92|53|38|W|region:US_type:landmark|name=Remmel Dam|display=inline}} | locmapin = | built = {{Start date|1924}} | engineer = Ford, Bacon, & Davis Co., Ambursen Construction Co. | builder = Ford, Bacon, & Davis Co., Ambursen Construction Co.<ref>{{Cite web |title=NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES REGISTRATION FORM |url=https://www.arkansasheritage.com/docs/default-source/national-registry/hs0049-pdf |access-date=5 June 2025 |website=www.arkansasheritage.com}}</ref> | architecture = Flat-slab buttress | added = September 4, 1992 | area = {{convert|2|acre}} | refnum = 92001084<ref name="nris">{{NRISref|version=2013a}}</ref> }}}}
==History==
=== Lake Hamilton === Lake Hamilton is a {{convert|7200|acre|ha|adj=on}} reservoir near Lake Hamilton, Arkansas and Hot Springs, Arkansas, located on the Ouachita River. It was named after Hamilton Moses, who later became president and chairman of the board for Arkansas Power and Light.<ref>{{cite web |title=Remmel, Catherine, Carpenter, and Hamilton: Who were they? |url=http://entergy.com/operations_information/hydro/utility_powerremmel.aspx |access-date=2014-11-01 |archive-date=2016-03-04 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304043056/http://entergy.com/operations_information/hydro/utility_powerremmel.aspx |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Colter Hamilton (Ham) Moses (1888–1966) |url=http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=2356}}</ref> The lake was created in 1932, formed as a result of '''Carpenter Dam''' (after Flavius Josephus Carpenter) which was constructed to generate hydroelectric power. The dam, which extends in a length of {{convert|1000|ft|m}} and a height of {{convert|100|ft|m}} high, was completed a year earlier in 1931.<ref name="Carpenter">{{cite web |title=NRHP nomination for Carpenter Dam |url=https://www.arkansasheritage.com/docs/default-source/national-registry/GA0078-pdf |publisher=Arkansas Preservation |accessdate=2015-05-14}}</ref> The lake subsequently functioned as a recreational site after attracting tourists, later spurring the development of resorts, restaurants, motels, and water sport facilities in its area. The Garvan Woodland Gardens, a {{convert|210|acre|ha|adj=on}} botanical park is located along its shore. Carpenter Dam was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.<ref name="Carpenter" />
=== Lake Catherine === Lake Catherine is the smaller of the two lakes, sized at {{convert|1940|acre|ha|adj=on}}. The Lake Catherine State Park is located on the lake's shore. The lake was created in the 1920's with the building of '''Remmel Dam''', a concrete-and-steel Ambursen-type buttressed dam. Remmel Dam was created to provide hydroelectricity, but the lake later developed into a recreational site as a result of lake's location next to Hot Springs.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Encyclopedia of Arkansas |url=https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/remmel-dam-2319/ |access-date=2024-06-22 |website=Encyclopedia of Arkansas |language=en-US}}</ref>
Lake Catherine is named after Harvey Couch's daughter, Catherine, the creator of the lake.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Harvey C. Couch |url=https://couchwood.org/history/harvey-c-couch/ |access-date=2024-06-22 |website=Couchwood |language=en-US}}</ref>
