A '''reed level''' is an Arabian invention used for determining the level in construction. It involves creating a hole through a long, straight reed and pouring water into its center. The reed is considered level when the flow of water out of both sides is equal.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.history-science-technology.com/articles/articles%2011.html|title= Engineering in Arabic-Islamic Civilization|first1= Donald R.|last1= Hill| first2=Ahmad Y.|last2=al-Hassan|website=history-science-technology.com|accessdate=11 September 2016}}</ref> This device serves the same purpose as a spirit level.
