Founded as a weekly in 1858,<ref name=loc/> the ''Herald'' has published daily since at least 1916.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn88077505/ |title=About Washington Herald 1916-1921|work=Chronicling America |publisher=Library of Congress |accessdate=June 11, 2012}}</ref> Two dailies, ''The Record-Republican'' and the ''Washington C.H. Herald'', merged in 1937 to form the current newspaper, which was known as the ''Washington C.H.
