The village's name origin is uncertain 'Edge enclosure' or perhaps, 'Randi's enclosure.'

==Church of St Helen== The 16th-century Church of St Helen, known as 'the Cathedral of the Broads',<ref>{{cite book |last=Standford |first=David |year=2007 |title=Norfolk Churches |edition=1st |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=ir_AKlgQcWIC |access-date=June 6, 2013 |publisher=Frances Lincoln Ltd |isbn=978-0711227422 |page=82}}</ref> has a fine 15th century painted rood screen and a rare Antiphoner.
