They were built as part of the MMTB's plan to quickly increase the size of its fleet at its Holden Street Workshops. Twenty were rebuilt for use on all night services and in this role they travelled across the network.<ref>{{cite book|last1=Cross|first1=Norman|last2=Budd|first2=Dale|last3=Wilson|first3=Randall|title=Destination City Melbourne's Electric Trams|date=1993|publisher=Transit Publishing Australia|location=Sydney|isbn=0 909459 18 5|page=62|edition=5}}</ref><ref>[https://vicsig.net/trams/class/Q Q Class] Vicsig</ref><ref>[http://tmsv.org.au/gallery/fleet/mmtbs15w.htm M&MTB Q No 15W] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170313133120/http://www.tmsv.org.au/gallery/fleet/mmtbs15w.htm |date=13 March 2017 }} Tramway Museum Society of Victoria</ref><ref>[http://tmsv.org.au/gallery/fleet/mmtb199.htm M&MTB Q No 199] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170321163954/http://tmsv.org.au/gallery/fleet/mmtb199.htm |date=21 March 2017 }} Tramway Museum Society of Victoria</ref>
