In 1906 [[Ngāti Tūwharetoa]] and the Tongariro Timber Company struck an agreement for the construction of a 40-mile railway line from [[Kakahi, New Zealand|Kakahi]] (on the [[North Island Main Trunk|main trunk line]]) to Pukawa.
