The '''''Admiral Grigorovich'' class''' (also referred to as '''Krivak V class'''), Russian designation '''Project 11356R''', is a class of frigates built by the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad for the Russian Navy and Indian Navy, with a cost of $450–500 million. Based on the {{sclass|Talwar|frigate|4}}, six ships were ordered for the Russian Black Sea Fleet under two contracts in 2010 and 2011 as a complement to the {{sclass|Admiral Gorshkov|frigate|0}} frigates.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://vpk-news.ru/news/29657 |title=На фрегате "Адмирал Григорович" поднят Андреевский флаг |language=ru |date=11 March 2016 |work=vpk-news.ru |access-date=5 August 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161220194700/http://vpk-news.ru/news/29657 |archive-date=20 December 2016 |url-status=live}}</ref>

==History== By 2010–2011, it was decided the Russian Navy will procure six vessels based on the proven {{sclass|Talwar|frigate|0}} design, mainly due to repeated delays with production of ''Admiral Gorshkov'' frigates and because of the urgent need for new frigates necessary for modernization of the Black Sea Fleet.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://csis-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/legacy_files/files/publication/160310_Schwartz_AdmiralGorshkov_Web.pdf |title=Admiral Gorshkov Frigate Reveals Serious Shortcomings in Russia's Naval Modernization Program |first=Paul |last=Schwartz |date=1 March 2016 |website=Center for Strategic and International Studies |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161013190110/https://csis-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/legacy_files/files/publication/160310_Schwartz_AdmiralGorshkov_Web.pdf |archive-date=2016-10-13}}</ref> The Yantar Shipyard won the contract for construction of the frigates and three vessels were to be completed in four years. Since October 2016, it was claimed the three incomplete frigates, ''Admiral Butakov'', ''Admiral Istomin'' and ''Admiral Kornilov'', the construction of which was suspended in 2015 due to Ukraine's refusal to supply gas turbine power plants, are considered to be sold to India.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.firstpost.com/india/india-russia-sign-16-agreements-across-multiple-sectors-3053736.html |title=India, Russia sign 16 agreements across multiple sectors |date=11 March 2016 |access-date=5 November 2016 |website=Firstpost.com |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161122092350/http://www.firstpost.com/india/india-russia-sign-16-agreements-across-multiple-sectors-3053736.html |archive-date=22 November 2016 |url-status=live}}</ref> The Russian Navy has opposed this export.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.rusnavyintelligence.com/2016/03/revue-de-presse-navale-du-11-mars-2016.html |title=Revue de presse navale du 11 mars 2016 |language=fr |website=Le portail des forces navales de la Fédération de Russie |access-date=2017-04-29 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170826075606/http://www.rusnavyintelligence.com/2016/03/revue-de-presse-navale-du-11-mars-2016.html |archive-date=2017-08-26 |url-status=live}}</ref>

On 1 June 2017, the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) announced that it would resume construction of the last three frigates in 2018 and that the ships would later join the Russian Navy. The decision to resume the work was made following the preliminary testing of latest Russian gas turbine engines, the M70FRU (14 MW) and M90FR (20 MW, maximal 25-28 MW), designed and built by NPO Saturn plant.<ref name="JanesRestart"/> With an access to alternative power plants, the ships were believed to remain in Russian service.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://bmpd.livejournal.com/2644867.html |title=Три фрегата проекта 11356 будут достроены для ВМФ России с российскими газотурбинными агрегатами |language=ru |date=3 June 2017 |work=bmpd.livejournal.com |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170605114153/http://bmpd.livejournal.com/2644867.html |archive-date=5 June 2017 |url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.armyrecognition.com/archives/archives-naval-defense/naval-defense-2017/russia-to-resume-the-construction-of-the-last-three-project-11356-frigates-in-2018 |title=Russia to resume the construction of the "last three" Project 11356 frigates in 2018 |date=3 June 2017 |work=Navyrecognition.com |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170604223955/http://navyrecognition.com/index.php/news/defence-news/2017/june-2017-navy-naval-forces-defense-industry-technology-maritime-security-global-news/5253-russia-to-resume-the-construction-of-the-last-three-project-11356-frigates-in-2018.html |archive-date=4 June 2017 |url-status=live}}</ref> In December 2017, NPO Saturn has successfully completed three R&D projects of the M90FR, Agregat-DKVP and M70FRU-R gas engines held since 2014.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://mil.today/2018/Industry12/ |title=Russian Navy to Get First Serial Home-Made Gas Turbines in 2019 |website=Mil.today |date=23 May 2018 |access-date=31 May 2020}}</ref>

=== Russian Invasion of Ukraine === Being deployed as part of the Black Sea Fleet, the Russian ships of the ''Admiral Grigorovich'' class were in the theatre of operations at the start of the war. On 12 April 2022, a ''Grigorovich''-class frigate reportedly shot down a Bayraktar TB2 drone during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.<ref>{{Citation |title=Analysis: Russian Navy's frigate downs Bayraktar drone with Shtil missile |url=https://www.navyrecognition.com/index.php/focus-analysis/11662-analysis-russian-navy-s-frigate-downs-bayraktar-drone-with-shtil-missile.html |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220426154126/https://www.navyrecognition.com/index.php/focus-analysis/11662-analysis-russian-navy-s-frigate-downs-bayraktar-drone-with-shtil-missile.html |url-status=dead |archive-date=26 April 2022 |publication-date=April 26, 2022 |publisher=Navy Recognition}}</ref> On 22 April a ''Grigorovich''-class frigate reportedly fired Kalibr cruise missiles against Ukrainian targets.{{Citation needed|date=March 2026}}

It was noted in June 2023 that the Russian Navy had started painting disruptive grey/black ship camouflage onto their ships, with both the ''Admiral Essen'' and ''Admiral Makarov'' receiving this pattern (though it was later removed from the ''Essen'').<ref>{{Cite web |date=2023-07-09 |title=Russian Navy’s New Deceptive Camouflage To Protect Kalibr-Armed Warships |url=https://www.hisutton.com/Russian-Navy-Deceptive-Camouflage-Overview.html |access-date=2026-05-01 |website=Covert Shores |language=en}}</ref> Ukraine claims to have targeted and hit the ''Admiral Essen'' and/or the ''Admiral Makarov'' on the 1st and 2nd March of 2026 with drone strikes and to have damaged them.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" />

==Export== As part of the deal signed on 20 October 2018 for delivery of ''Admiral Butakov'' and ''Admiral Istomin'' frigates to the Indian Navy, Rosoboronexport and Goa Shipyard have signed an additional contract for two more ''Admiral Grigorovich''-class frigates to be license-built at Goa Shipyard in India. Under the contract, Russia will provide India the technological know-how to build the frigates on its own. The final cost for the two vessels is yet to be determined, but was estimated at US$500 million for the foreign content. The Indian Navy should receive the ships in 2026 and 2027, respectively.<ref name="TASSnov2018"/><ref name="TDPnov2018"/><ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/india-russia-to-hammer-out-mega-navy-deal-in-goa-today/story-sgP4UUXPwkY6XtDkQadNTI.html |title=India, Russia sign $500 million navy deal for 2 stealth frigates |website=Hindustan Times |date=20 November 2018 |access-date=31 May 2020}}</ref>
