The name of the regency, and of its chief town, came from the Javanese language terms "thousand (''sewu'') bamboo (''pring'')", as the location of the town was once a bamboo forest.<ref>{{Cite book | last = Benoit | first = D. | authorlink = |author2=Marc Pain | title = Transmigration et migrations spontanées en Indonésie: Transmigration and spontaneous migrations in Indonesia | publisher = IRD Editions | date = 1989 | url = https://books.google.com/books?id=zl4YIr1aFSsC | isbn = 9782709909709 }}</ref>
==Administrative districts== Administratively at 2010 the regency was divided into eight districts (''kecamatan''). However, since 2010 a ninth district (Pangelaran Utara) has been created from part of the existing Pangelaran District, bringing the total to nine districts. Each district has the same name as the district's administrative centre. These are tabulated below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 Census<ref name="Biro Pusat Statistik 2011"/> and the 2020 Census,<ref name="Badan Pusat Statistik 2021"/> together with the official estimates as at mid 2024.<ref name="Badan Pusat Statistik 2025">Badan Pusat Statistik, Jakarta, 28 February 2025, ''Kabupaten Pringsewu Dalam Angka 2025'' (Katalog-BPS 1102001.1810)</ref> The table also includes the number of administrative villages in each district (totaling 128 rural ''desa'' and 5 urban ''kelurahan'', the latter all in Pringsewu District), and its post code.
