A '''preprohormone''' is the precursor protein to one or more prohormones, which are in turn precursors to peptide hormones.<ref>{{cite book |last1=Voet |first1=Donald |last2=Voet |first2=Judith |year=2010 |title=Biochemistry|url=https://archive.org/details/biochemistrythed00voet |url-access=limited |publisher=John Wiley & Sons |location=Hoboken, NJ |isbn=9780470570951|page=[https://archive.org/details/biochemistrythed00voet/page/n704 675]|edition=4th}} </ref> In general, the protein consists of the amino acid chain that is created by the hormone-secreting cell, before any changes have been made to it. It contains a signal peptide, the hormone(s) itself (themselves), and intervening amino acids. Before the hormone is released from the cell, the signal peptide and other amino acids are removed.<ref>{{cite web|title=Introduction to Endocrine Physiology|url=https://courses.washington.edu/conj/bess/intro/intro3.html|website=courses.washington.edu|publisher=University of Washington|accessdate=17 November 2017}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|last1=Owens|first1=Anthony|title=Prohormones: Effects, Risks, and Legality|url=http://prohormones.co/effects-risks-and-legality/|website=prohormones.co|accessdate=17 November 2017|date=23 June 2017}}</ref>
